IS MICHAEL JESUS CHRIST?

Yes, according to Ellen G. White (EGW), the Seventh-day Adventist’s prophet, and also taught by the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Evangelical Christianity has rejected the teaching that Michael is Christ, because it is not Biblical. It may surprise you to learn that there are only five references in the entire Bible to Michael, and not one reference names Michael as Jesus Christ. We will look at each one of them.

Michael reference one; “one of the chief princes.”

Dan 10:13 (NIV) But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.

EGW: “For three weeks Gabriel wrestled with the powers of darkness, seeking to counteract the influences at work on the mind of Cyrus; and before the contest closed, Christ Himself came to Gabriel’s aid.” Prophets and Kings, p.572

The Bible identifies Michael as the one that came to Gabriel’s aid and Ellen White contends that it was Christ that came to Gabriel’s aid.

Notice: Michael “is one” of the chief princes, which places him in a group of other chief princes. How large that group is we are not told. Michael is in a group of equals. Michael could not be Christ, as Christ is not described as one of equals. Christ is described in John 3:16, as “one and only Son.” The Greek for “only” is, “monogenes,” one of a kind or unique one. Again this shows that Michael cannot be Christ.

Michael references two, three; “your prince” and “the great prince.”

Dan 10:21 (NIV) …but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.

Dan 12:1 (NIV) “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.

Notice: The three references to Michael in Daniel are: “one of the chief princes,” “your prince,” and “the great prince.” Christ is never referred to, as one of the chief princes, your prince or the great prince in the Bible. Jesus is called, “Prince of peace,” — Isa. 9:6, and “Prince and Savior” — Acts 5:31. As one can see, the titles of Michael and Jesus are not the same.

Michael reference four; “archangel.”

Jude 1:9 (NIV) But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

2 Pet 2:11 (NIV) …yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.

Michael an angel, did the work of angels as outlined in 2 Peter, as he did not bring a slanderous accusation against the devil.

Jude does not identify the archangel Michael, as Christ. But what is an archangel?

From Strong’s Dictionary, 743. “archaggelos, ar-khang’-el-os; from G757 and G32; a chief angel:—archangel.”

Archangel means a chief angel. Michael therefore is a chief angel. Jesus is not a chief angel, or a created being, but Commander over the angels. He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings.

Michael said to the devil, “the Lord rebuke you.” Michael as archangel (chief angel) a created being, does not have authority to rebuke the devil in disputing over the body of Moses, so he invokes the Lord’s name.

EGW: “Satan the tempter had claimed the body of Moses because of his sin; but Christ the Saviour brought him forth from the grave.” Desire of Ages, p.421.

EGW: Moses passed through death, but Michael came down and gave him life before his body had seen corruption. Satan tried to hold the body, claiming it as his; but Michael resurrected Moses and took him to heaven. Satan railed bitterly against God, denouncing Him as unjust in permitting his prey to be taken from him; but Christ did not rebuke His adversary, though it was through his temptation that the servant of God had fallen. He meekly referred him to His Father, saying, “The Lord rebuke thee.” Early Writings, p. 164.

Ellen makes non-Biblical claims about Moses’ body such as; Michael gave Moses life before his body had seen corruption. Jesus restored Lazarus to life after his body started decaying and after four days in the grave. Why did God believe it was necessary for the “remnant church” to have this startling piece of news, that Moses was resurrected before his body started to decay?

In another confrontation with Satan

Zech 3:1-2 (NIV) Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”

Joshua is standing before the angel of the Lord. The term, “angel of the LORD” used in the O T is often seen as Christ. In this text without a doubt, it is the Lord that rebukes Satan. The Bible never refers to the Lord as the archangel Michael. Michael is never called “the angel of the LORD.”

Voice of the archangel

1 Thess 4:16 (NIV) For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Jesus comes “with” the voice of the archangel. Doesn’t this prove that Jesus is Michael? No. The fact is all the angels accompany Jesus at his Second Coming, which would include Michael the archangel. Thus Michael’s voice will be heard, along with the trumpet call of the Lord. The Lord will have the voice of the archangel which will give an archangelic shout that will raise the dead.

2 Thess 1:7 (NIV) …and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels.

Verse 9. Michael, the archangel—Nowhere in Scripture is the plural used, “archangels”; but only ONE, “archangel.” The only other passage in the New Testament where it occurs, is 1 Thessalonians 4:16, where Christ is distinguished from the archangel, with whose voice He shall descend to raise the dead; they therefore err who confound Christ with Michael. The name means, Who is like God? In Daniel 10:13 he is called “One (‘the first,’ Margin) of the chief princes.” He is the champion angel of Israel. In Revelation 12:7 the conflict between Michael and Satan is again alluded to.

about the body of Moses—his literal body. Satan, as having the power of death, opposed the raising of it again, on the ground of Moses’ sin at Meribah, and his murder of the Egyptian. That Moses’ body was raised, appears from his presence with Elijah and Jesus (who were in the body) at the Transfiguration: the sample and earnest of the coming resurrection kingdom, to be ushered in by Michael’s standing up for God’s people. Thus in each dispensation a sample and pledge of the future resurrection was given: Enoch in the patriarchal dispensation, Moses in the Levitical, Elijah in the prophetical. It is noteworthy that the same rebuke is recorded here as was used by the Angel of the Lord, or Jehovah the Second Person, in pleading for Joshua, the representative of the Jewish Church, against Satan, in Zechariah 3:2; whence some have thought that also here “the body of Moses” means the Jewish Church accused by Satan, before God, for its filthiness, on which ground he demands that divine justice should take its course against Israel, but is rebuked by the Lord who has “chosen Jerusalem”: thus, as “the body of Christ” is the Christian Church, so “the body of Moses” is the Jewish Church. But the literal body is evidently here meant (though, secondarily, the Jewish Church is typified by Moses’ body, as it was there represented by Joshua the high priest); and Michael, whose connection seems to be so close with Jehovah-Messiah on the one hand, and with Israel on the other, naturally uses the same language as his Lord. As Satan (adversary in court) or the devil (accuser) accuses alike the Church collectively and “the brethren” individually, so Christ pleads for us as our Advocate. Israel’s, and all believers’ full justification, and the accuser’s being rebuked finally, is yet future. Josephus [Antiquities,4.8], states that God hid Moses’ body, lest, if it had been exposed to view, it would have been made an idol of. Jude, in this account, either adopts it from the apocryphal “assumption of Moses” (as Origen [Concerning Principalities, 3.2] thinks), or else from the ancient tradition on which that work was founded. Jude, as inspired, could distinguish how much of the tradition was true, how much false. We have no such means of distinguishing, and therefore can be sure of no tradition, save that which is in the written word.

Michael reference five: “Michael.”

(Rev 12:7 NIV) “And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.”

Michael, the chief angel, led the loyal angels to battle against the devil and his angels and was victorious. John does not identify Michael as Christ!

  1. “If no angel can ever be called God’s Son (Hebrews 1:5)and Jesus is in fact the Son of Godthen doesn’t this mean that Jesus cannot be the archangel Michael?”
  2. “If no angel can rule the world (Hebrews 2:5)and if Scripture clearly says that Christ is ruler of the world (Luke 1:32-33; Revelation 19:16)then doesn’t this mean that Christ cannot be the archangel Michael?”

Conclusion

  • The Bible does not call the archangel Michael, Christ!
  • Calling Michael a created angel Christ, is bearing false witness against Christ’s deity as God.
  • Ellen G. White by calling Michael Christ, has made an addition to the Bible.
  • Jesus would have us lift him up, not demote him to the level of a created angel.
  • Jesus is not an archangel, a created being, but the Creator and head of all the Heavenly Host.
  • Michael is an archangel, and one of many archangels or chief princes. (Dan 10:13 NIV) “But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.”

  1. For some time I have been wondering why the identification of Michael in Daniel 12:1 is an issue. I fully understand challenging SDA and JW interpretation, but I have not settled this in my mind. Do not assume that I am hanging on to SDA prophecy baggage. For example, I believe that SDA teaching that the “seal” of God is the sabbath is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit Who Is the true Seal (2 Corinthians 1:22).
    I am not questioning the identification of the archangel and angels in the New Testament as in Hebrews or Jude, but there are many symbolic representations in Scripture, including several places in the Old Testament, where Divinity is referred to as The Angel of the LORD, (See Genesis 22:11-18; Exodus 3:2; Judges 2:1; Judges 6:11-16.)

    Further, there are numerous types and representations of Christ in the O. T., including “Captain of the host” Joshua 5:14 NASB which seems similar to Daniel 8:11 “Commander of the host” (NASB) or “Prince of the Host” (KV).
    Among many examples of human or earthly representations of Christ is, ”My Servant David shall be King over them and they shall have one Shepherd…and David My Servant shall be their Prince” Ezekiel 37:24, 25, and also “I will set over them one Shepherd, my servant David…and my servant David shall be Prince among them…”
    I understand the point that Michael is one of the angels, but in the context of Daniel 12:1 and maybe even 10:21, there seems to be a switch from the historically fulfilled prophecy, to a cosmic prophecy. That in 12:1 it is now the Great Prince that has charge of God’s people. (I need to study it further to test this out, but I think that a shift from the historical setting to a cosmic Christ centered application is in line with other Old Testament Scriptures.)

    Even the name Michael, which means “who is like God?” seems to reference Satan’s challenge in Eden “you will be like God”. This elevating self to the position of God is, I believe, the essence of the mark of the beast.
    Perhaps, my questioning comes because of my view of prophecy. I believe that though the Old Testament prophecies were often illustrated by events in Israel, their primary fulfillment was in Christ. The “time of trouble, such as never has been” was fulfilled in Christ on the cross. The wrath of God was expiated in Christ Who became sin for us; it was He Who bore the full weight of sin. Never again will there be a judgment on one person like there was in Christ Who took on Himself the entire consequence of sin.
    What took place at Calvary when Jesus Christ paid the full penalty for sin fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies of wrath and glory. What was accomplished by Christ is now ours in the Spirit, and we are just waiting for the victory party of bodily resurrection. There may well be a physical tribulation in the final gasp of this fallen planet, but Scripture does not require it.
    So my question is why does identification of Michael in Daniel 12:1 matter significantly? Is it an essential? It seems to me to be a prophecy interpretation issue.

    1. MJB, there are two approaches to reading Scripture: an allegorical approach, and a more literal approach. The literal approach reads the Bible as one would read a normal book, using normal rules of grammar, vocabulary, and figurative language. Instead of reading it and attempting to apply meaning to the prophecies as if they were allegories of something that will come, we read them as saying what the writer actually means.

      This normal reading of the text results in mores internal consistency and a clearer picture of what God is revealing. The allegorical reading tends to see the Old Testament prophecies as no longer applying to Israel since they apostatized. Instead, this approach says the church now receives the blessings God promised to them and ultimately, the promises of land and a kingdom will be fulfilled in the new heaven and new earth. The normal reading, on the other hand, sees those prophecies as meaning what they say, even if they are still awaiting their fulfillment.

      In fact, if God’s unilateral, unconditional promises to Israel are not eternal and true, then how can we trust that He will ultimately keep His New Covenant promises to us wild gentile branches who have been grafted into the tree of God’s eternal plans and purposes?

      Daniel 10 places Michael into the same “category” as the princes of Persia and of Greece against whom the angelic speaker was contending. Michael was the prince who stood with God’s messenger against the princes of the pagan gentile nations. In Daniel 12:1, Michael’s identity is even clearer: he is “the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people.”

      In context “the sons of your people” is clear: the Jews. Michael the archangel is the prince over the Jews as other evil angels are princes over Persia and Greece. The classification of them is the same: princes. They are of similar rank and function. Jesus cannot be such a “prince”. He is not in any sense of similar rank and authority of any angelic overseer of a single nation.

      In Jude, Michael the Archangel refuses to rebuke Satan. In fact, Jude says this about Michael, he “did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said ‘The Lord rebuke you!'” (v. 9).

      Again, this reference cannot refer to Jesus. He directly rebuked Satan when He was on earth. He drove him and his minions out of the Gadarene demoniac. He told Satan to get behind Him when Peter articulated the dark words that opposed the idea of Jesus going to the cross. Jesus is God. He is Satan’s creator. He has absolute authority over him.

      These distinctions are important because if we see Michael the Archangel as Jesus, He is less than the Father. His attributes are not equal to God. If He cannot pronounce an accusation against Satan, then He is not omnipotent. If He defers to “the Lord” to rebuke Satan, then Jesus is not Lord.

      But Jesus IS Lord. He is God the Son and one with His Father. The identity of Michael is more than a prophecy interpretation.

      The OT “angel of the Lord” received worship from humans; no angel receives worship. IN fact, in Revelation 19:10 John bows at the feet of the being in his vision, and that angel rebukes him and tells him not to worship him because he is “a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God.” Because the OT “angel of the Lord” receives worship, we can be quite confident that he was a manifestation of the pre-incarnate Christ.

      If prophecy doesn’t mean what it says, then we have a problem trusting the words of Scripture. To be sure, many prophecies are “telescoping”; they have immediate, future, and far future fulfillments. Nevertheless, their fulfillments cannot be significantly different from the meanings the first readers understood. The prophecies were given to them for their comfort and instruction, and they have to mean something real to them.

      Hebrews is clear that the men and women of faith died without receiving what was promised, but they saw and welcomed those promises from afar. What they were promised, they will receive—and because God is bigger than anything we can imagine, He has grafted believing gentiles into His future fulfillments as well. God will keep His promises that He made, even the ones that seem impossible to us today (such as those in the book of Ezekiel and even many in Isaiah and Jeremiah and the minor prophets). Jesus is the One in whom all the promises are realized, and we can rejoice because, as Paul says in speaking of God’s promises to Israel, “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Rom. 11:29).

      All to say, Michael’s identity as NOT Jesus is important. Jesus is never on a class with other angels or beings, and He is never limited from rebuking his fallen creation, Satan.

  2. Jesus is Not Michael the Archangel

    The teaching that Jesus is Michael the Archangel is an old, tired Arian argument. The early Adventist pioneers taught the heresy called “Arianism” which teaches that Jesus is not God the Son, the second Person of the Trinity. Those who believe this false doctrine teach that Jesus is an exalted angel. Those, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, who promote this heresy today teach that Jesus is Michael the Archangel.
    This early Adventist heresy appeared in several books and articles published by the church. It even manifested itself in the hymnology of the church. In the official Seventh-day Adventist hymnal, published from 1941 until its recent revision in 1985, the church had changed the words of the hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy” which says, “God in three Persons, blessed Trinity” to “God overall who rules eternity.”

  3. THE BIBLE SAYS:
    “For to which of the angels did He ever say, ‘Thou art My Son, today I have begotten thee?'” Hebrews 1:5 (emphasis added).
    “But of the Son He says, ‘Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever…'” Hebrews 1:8a (emphasis added).
    “But to which of the angels has He ever said, ‘Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet?’ Are they [the angels] not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews 1:13-14 (emphasis added).

    It is clear from Scripture that Jesus is NOT and has never been an angel or an archangel! It would appear that the only support you have for such a belief is the literature of heretical cults and the writings Ellen White
