Happy To Be Out

My fiancée and I have different stories of leaving Adventism. I quit church originally in the late 80’s as a confused nearly twenty-something. I never got baptized as a youth because it never felt right to do. I started to attend the Adventist church again when I stated to date my girlfriend, but when I was attending some of the local churches with her, all my issues with the church began to surface again. I am sad to say that the list of Adventist churches that I will never go to is a lot longer than the one I would consider to attend. 

I am happy that we are out. I am happy that I watched your YouTube videos with Nikki Stevenson on Cultish about the Adventist cult. I have very strong feelings about what the Adventist church system did to cause stress for my dad his whole life while he was trying to be good enough for God. I pray that he got his salvation in spite of the organization.

Response: I thank God as well! It is an absolute miracle when the Lord rescues us from that tangle of deception. It’s hard to see—but God is faithful, and once He opens our eyes, we cannot UNSEE. His mercy and atonement are amazing.

Colleen Tinker, the editor of Proclamation! magazine, and her husband Richard left Adventism in 1998 with their two sons, Roy and Nathanael, who were in grades six and ten. They have co-led the Former Adventist Fellowship since 1999. Colleen, a graduate of Walla Walla University, is a former high school English teacher and also the former managing editor of Adventist Today magazine.
